The book's design incorporates two states: when closed, the cover and spine represent darkness; when open, light determines the sequence and arrangement of the photos.

"When asked why I photographed so many dead fish, I answered that they were much easier to photograph than live ones. But a more thoughtful answer is that I think it is the energy, the cruelty and the controlled chaos of a fish market. There are the first rays of sunlight shining on the neatly stacked fish; the boats still arriving after weeks at sea; and the endless amounts of tuna being pulled from the boats to be shipped to every corner of the world. In the rush, somewhere along the way, we forget that dead fish are animals too.” Florian Schuchlenz
